River Brede in Flood

River Brede

A rare break in the clouds enabled me to take a couple of photos of the River Brede in flood. If the internet is to be believed, during the summer it is home to man eating blanket weed, a particular danger to canoeists and fishermen. It is also an occasional home for seals.

The River Brede is a small river these days, a shadow of it’s former self. In the 13th century the river was tidal and a navigable by merchants bringing wine to Winchelsea. Along with the River Rother and the ports of Rye and Hastings the changing landscape during the 13th and 14th centuries affected the River Brede too.

Flooding can help the imaginative to get an idea of how the river looked in its glory days.
