Bodiam Castle, built in 1385 by Edward Dalyngrigge, is now a National Trust property. They were bequeathed the property in 1925 by Lord Curzon who had purchased the derelict castle in 1917. He did a great deal of work to restore it. Lord Curzon, an interesting character,  had previously served as Viceroy in India between 1898 and 1905. Whilst there he also worked to restore a number of Indian landmarks including the Taj Mahal.

Bodiam Castle is what every boy thinks a castle should look like. The moat, the towers, crenellations and portcullis were always an inspiration for the many drawings of castles I did. It was built to impress as much as be a defensive structure. Nearly 700 years later it still meets that brief.

Fat carp swim in large numbers around the bridge, fighting the equally large numbers of voracious ducks for bread. On a day like the one that this picture was taken on, the castle and grounds is a very pleasant place to be.
