This is a digital painting from a photograph I took of Hastings beach some years ago. The original photo was taken on a day in 2014 when there was a thinning sea mist and the sun was beginning to break through. This made the scene fairly bright but with muted grey and brown colours. I decided to process the photo as black and white, keeping the highlights so that the scene was simplified.

Looking for things to paint, I thought this image would be good to use to create a nice minimalist beach scene. I kept the two children in the scene, but didn’t include their parents or some other swimmers. I like how it turned out.
